1952 Ford F1
As is usual, when I buy a car, truck or motorcycle despite assurances from the seller that there are no known issues, it usually takes weeks or months to get the vehicle off the 4-post ramp when it's lifted for the first time. Well this truck was certainly no exception.
Given the state of the front brake pads and rear shoes it's a wonder this truck could actually stop. I managed to ascertain the front discs and calipers were GM 1979-88 (Front caliper Left 45915 / Front caliper Right 459756). I ordered and fitted a set of front pads: Brake Pads Front Chevrolet Blazer S10 82-96/Camaro 82-92.
The rear axle needed a lot of attention, including all oil seals, outer bearings, shoes, wheel cylinders and drums. As you can see from the photos, the rear brakes were completely overhauled. The drums I decided to get machined. The brake parts I purchased from Germany: www.kilan-shop.de.
Three days were devoted to wire brushing the underside including the chassis before everything was treated to two coats of POR15.
When I bought the truck I knew straight away I wanted to replace the deck timber for something a bit more original. Luckily, I had in storage some floorboards that had been used in a house of mine for 24 years, and before that they were gracing the floors of a very expensive 18th century home in St Johns Wood, which I managed to salvage from a skip during building works. It's very satisfying giving something a second life, let alone a third one. It's hard to believe looking at them, but hours were spent sanding, repairing and prepping them ready for 5 coats of sealer.
Being 6'1" the bench seat position wasn't great because the battery had been squeezed in behind the seat. I therefore ran brand new cables and electrics and moved the battery to the rear deck. At the same time, I changed all the fuse holders and incorporated everything into the vintage chest, which makes maintenance really easy. I also fitted a battery cut-out to the side of the chest.
All the lights were cleaned up or replaced to ensure the best integrity for visibility and conspicuity.
A new handbrake, linkages and cables were installed.
A full service with all oils, filter and new brake fluid.
The rear screen leaked and a new rubber was imported from the States and installed.
In summary, a shed load of work has been done to ensure the truck is 100% safe and running as it should. The truck was road-tested and all the niggles identified and rectified.
